Pros and Cons of Joining a Real Estate Team

As a new real estate agent one important decision to make is whether to join a team or fly solo. There is no right or wrong answer, nor is one path easier than the other. It is up to the individual to decide what best suites their situation and personality.

If you find value in having a strong support system and mentors to help you get your footing in the real estate world, then a team is best for you.

If you thrive best being independent, then you may want to fly solo. Can’t decide? Below are some pros and cons of joining a team.

Pros:

  • Ability to earn leads
  • When you are new in the industry, it can be a challenge to get some traction generating leads. Luckily, teams usually have a lead generation system already in place.
  • Marketing is done for you.
  • You don’t have to focus your time on all the different aspects that go into Realtor marketing. Your team will most likely already have a support team or system to get these tasks done for you.
  • You get training from your team leader
  • When you join a team, you can gain knowledge and get accustomed to the business quicker because your team is there to help you learn the tricks of the trade.
  • Your team has your back
  • You have peace of mind knowing that if you have questions, are out sick, or out of town, your team has your back.
  • You can collaborate to solve issues or assist clients
  • You have a team that all have different experiences and backgrounds with real estate. When an issue arises, you can count on your team to help you solve these challenges.

Cons:

  • Typically net less of your commission
  • The commission is usually lower because you have to share earnings with your team members and support staff.
  • More restrictions on how you schedule your day
  • A lot of people go into real estate because of the flexible schedule and independence. When you choose to become a part of a team you lose some of that independence.
  • You don’t control your own branding
  • You will be associated with your team and will have to market yourself under their team name and logo.
  • You have to follow the systems and processes of the team
